WGCU Public Media, in partnership with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation and the Women's Fund of Southwest Florida, is accepting nominations for 2015 MAKERS: Women Who Make Southwest Florida. The public is invited to nominate a woman who is impacting Southwest Florida and leaving her mark in the arts, business, education, environment, health/wellness, politics or social justice. Nominations will be accepted at www.wgcumakers.org from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. Previous MAKERS are not eligible. Nominees will be considered by a selection committee of MAKERS alumni and WGCU leaders. WGCU will notify the five women selected as 2015 MAKERS in November 2014.
Inspired by the PBS national project MAKERS.com, WGCU MAKERS preserves the stories of remarkable Southwest Florida women. WGCU produces video and audio portraits of the MAKERS to air on WGCU TV and WGCU FM and archives their stories at wgcumakers.org for future generations.
“Being selected to join the MAKERS is like becoming a part of a kaleidoscope. Prisms of light and color moving independently and yet coming together to create an experience filled with smiles and beauty. Each of the pieces of glass and the color has a story to tell of need, suffering, neglect, challenge and ultimately success,” said 2014 MAKER Nancy Lascheid, Naples. “This circle of caring created by strong women results in a better life for many. I was honored to be included and to meet others, hear their stories and sense the color of their glass which created the kaleidoscope. Southwest Florida is blessed by the MAKERS.”
In addition to Lascheid, 2013 MAKERS are: Rita Bertler, Sharon Bruckman, Myra Daniels, Laura Safer Espinoza, Eve Haverfield, Martha Hill, Theresa Ink, Kimberly Leach Johnson, Darla Letourneau, Pam Oakes, Julie Shematz, Michele Valencourt and Gail Williams. 2012 MAKERS are: Samira K. Beckwith, Ellie Boyd, Susan A Bridges, Andrea Clark Brown, Karen Clawson, Ellin Goetz, Carmen Rey-Gomez, Lalai Hamric, Ann Reiasner Jacobson, Carla Brooks Johnston, Sharon McDonald, Barbara Mainster, Gail Markham, Reiko Niiya, Ellen Peterson, Nely Rodriguez, Veronica Shoemaker, Hilary Swain, Marty Valiant, Rae Ann Wessel and Trudi K. Williams. Their video portraits, produced by Chelle Koster-Walton, and audio portraits, produced by Jenny Tavery, are available at www.wgcumakers.org
The opening of nominations in September coincides with the premiere of the PBS MAKERS new six-part series spotlighting women in comedy, Hollywood, space, business, politics and war. The series premieres on WGCU HDTV Tuesday, Sept. 30 @ 9 pm.
